Osteopathy For Babies & Women During Pregnancy

Osteopathy is increasingly being sought as a treatment for pregnancy related complaints and for babies and children. Osteopaths receive both a theoretical and practical grounding in treating these areas. At the European school of osteopathy for example, students receive two years tuition and one year of clinical experience treating infants, toddlers and assisting during pregnancy, which is compulsory and examined. The course content includes disorders of pregnancy and infancy as well as providing understanding of the birth process and its effect on mother and child. Osteopaths have a thorough training in the anatomy and biomechanics of the body, which can be usefully applied to the changes that occur in pregnancy to weight-bearing and body mechanics. They are also taught in detail about foetal and child development.

Methods of treatment vary, and osteopaths have a wide range of tools that can be effectively adapted for these cases, safely and considerately applied. Many practitioners favour using cranial and functional techniques for children and pregnancy, but there is a great variety of effective approaches. Because osteopaths understand anatomy and the process of human development, many patients report that pregnancy and birth related complaints have responded well to treatment. It can be particularly useful to go to an osteopath who specialises in treating pregnant women and children.

Pregnancy related lower back pain is a miserable condition that can wear you down, at a time when it should be all about getting ready for one of the most exciting and precious moments of your life.
That constant ache and spasming pain is experienced by 75% of pregnant women, and is often simply born as part of the misery of pregnancy. It doesn’t have to be this way. Osteopaths are the go to place to get relief and advice about making things better.
There are a number of reasons why this happens, mainly to do with how your centre of gravity has changed as your precious cargo grows and develops. Getting relief can be as simple as getting the right exercises and the right treatment from someone who knows exactly what they are doing.

Amy Baker from Southall came to see Radhika about her overwhelming lower back pain that came on 5 months into her first pregnancy.

“Words can hardly express how grateful I am to Radhika. My pregnancy had become a dark tunnel of constant pain and it was getting almost impossible to do normal things. Radhika was so kind and sympathetic. She knew exactly how to help and what needed to be done.

After 4 treatments I was 90% better and my everyday life was transformed. Thank you to Radhika and everyone at Osteo and Physio Regent Parks. You guys are amazing!”

Before discussing the approach that osteopaths provide for the care of both children and babies during pregnancy and infancy it is important to highlight the paucity of research that currently exists in this area confirming the efficacy of the treatment. This is largely because of the difficulty in designing experiments that can accurately measure results in subjects who have yet to develop clear communication skills.
